Villum Center of Excellence for Dirac Materials

The final meeting of the Villum Centre of Excellence for Dirac Materials took place on June 29th and 30th at Fuglsøcentret. It was an amazing two full days of scientific talks and inspiring group discussions for future collaborations and projects. A massive thank you to Philip Hofmann for leading such a successful and productive Center. It was an honour to be part of it.

Building of the SGM4 nanoARPES endstation is complete!

Can’t quite believe it - Team SG4M has finished building the nanoARPES endstation! It’s under vacuum and we are ready to bake!

Beamtime!

MSc student Christian Nielsen (co-supervised by Federico Mazzola) explores the world of mattagamites during a nanoARPES beamtime. Here he is, photographed while working in the lab on SGM4.  It was an exciting week filled with loads of measurements and, thankfully, samples that remained stable over time, unlike the last round. Check out the video below for a comparison with our previous less-stable samples.

Exploring Delta-Layers

BSc student John Flounders (photo) teams up with collaborators Justin Wells and Simon Cooil from Oslo University, along with their great group of PhD students. Together, they investigate the band structure of a 2D metallic layer buried within a silicon host matrix during an exciting beamtime!

Congratulations!

BSc students Gustav, My, Ulver, and Jonas have successfully completed their BSc projects, and their achievements are nothing short of remarkable. Their endeavours spanned from constructing the innovative Quasi-crystal Chamber to delving into TMDCs with STM to analyzing big data sets from the SGM4 beamline on 2D magnets. You can now explore their BSc projects in the publications section, a testament to their exceptional dedication and the fun times we had in the lab together!

Thank you Lars Kruse!

Privileged to feature in a farewell photograph captured by Lars Kruse on his 37-year retirement milestone at Aarhus University. Lars has photographed our lab on a number of occasions, and made each session a fun experience. We were thrilled to discover, in his interview with Omnibus, that our lab ranks among the craziest places he's documented!

The fantastic world of 2D magnetic semiconductors

At the forefront of materials research, PhD student Paulina guides BSc student Jonas in the analysis of complex data from SGM4 - our cutting-edge nanoARPES beamline situated at the ASTRID2 synchrotron. Their efforts aim to unravel the electronic properties of a intriguing class of 2D magnetic semiconductors!

Intrepid experimentalist

Ulver is trying out new methods to synthesize single-layer niobium disulphide on bilayer graphene!

Trailblazers

Gustav and My making huge progress in building up the new Quasi Chamber for their BSc projects. This chamber will house an Aarhus STM and LEED unit to study quasicrystals. Here they are in the midst of a bolt tightening party!

Kvant magazine

So cool to be mentioned in the December 2022 issue of Kvant!

SGM4 NanoARPES Inauguration

We celebrated the completion of the new SGM4 nanoARPES beamline at ASTRID2 this week. It was a fantastic time! We celebrated in true Danish style with hotdogs and drinks. Thank you to everyone who came out to celebrate with us and the many people who contributed to making the dream of SGM4 a reality!

Christian V. B. Nielsen’s BSc Project

Congratulations to Christian V. B. Nielsen on successfully completing a fantastic BSc project. His project was dedicated to growing and characterizing single-layer niobium disulphide on bilayer graphene. He will continue in the Quantum Materials Group for his MSc starting in August.
